Safety Training
TRAINING WILL INCREASE YOUR
CHANCES OF GETTING THAT JOB
I have been perusing
the job market recently. Not for
myself but as research to
determine what employers are
looking for when recruiting new
members of staff.
Clearly,
during a recession employers are
not recruiting as much as in the
good times but there are still
jobs out there to be found.
The present
coalition government have today
announced that they are to press
ahead with cuts totalling 6
billion pounds. Many of these
cuts will be in the form of jobs
at the front line in the public
sector. This may well jeopardise
the recovery as it will throw
more people on to the dole and
claiming benefit. Its not good
news for anyone seeking work
either as for them it means more
and more competition for every
single job advertised.
Of course,
there will always be
opportunities for self employed
people to diversify but what of
the average man or woman seeking
permanent employment?
Well, it’s
bad but not disastrous if you
have training in a specific
area. One thing to check into is
government legislation in health
and safety leading to jobs which
used to be done by labourers but
now require specialist training.
For example, in 2005 the
government introduced the work
at height regulations. This had
and still does have a massive
impact across all industries. I
have looked at blogs and forums
for the plumbing, electrical,
plastering, stage lighting and
general building industries. One
thing which crops up time and
again is
Pasma training. For
example, a chap looking for an
electricians mate in West
Yorkshire on a forum was
insisting that whoever got the
job must have the aforementioned
qualification. Why? Well,
working at height still remains
the biggest risk in construction
activities. 25% of all deaths
and many more serious injuries
occur as a result as a fall from
height. Insurance premiums are
on the rise for companies who
flout their responsibilities in
respect of health and safety,
particularly in dangerous
activities.
So, the
message is – get yourself
trained and get on the blogs and
forums where it still seems that
there is a demand for well
trained, competent workers.
One other
thing to say is that there is
funding available through Job
Centre Plus for anyone who is
out of work and seeking
training. Many employers are
prepared to take people on if
they can provide evidence of
appropriate qualifications.
